Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz

Anna in the Tropics follows a Cuban American family-owned cigar factory in Ybor City, Florida. A lector, a well-dressed man hired to read literature to the workers, reads from Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, and as he reads, the workers inner and outer lives are examined and put on display. Using poetic language and dialogue, Nilo Cruz crafts a Pulitzer-winning story about desire, literature, tradition, and the looming mechanized future.
