Reports to: Production Manager

The Assistant Stage Manager (“ASM”) will be a key player in ensuring the functionality of the rehearsal room as well as the production process. The ASM is largely responsible for tracking much of the scenic, costume, and prop elements of the production and ensuring that the backstage environment runs smoothly. They will also work with the Stage Manager closely, in addition to designers, to ensure communication between all relevant teams involved with the show.

The full list of expectations of this position are listed below in accordance with the STA Contract:

Stage Managers

  1. The Stage Manager shall be the individual who is assigned to and is primarily responsible for a specific production or productions. 
    1. Primary responsibilities include: scheduling rehearsal dates/times, running rehearsals, sending daily calls and reports, running tech, calling performances, communication with directors and designers, as well as holding production accountable to the ES Equity Rules.
    2. The Stage Manager is responsible for sending out Daily Calls and Rehearsal Reports.
  1.     All Daily Calls should be sent out to actors, designers, Producers, and whichever member of the Organization’s board requests them.
  2.     All Rehearsal Reports should be sent out to Producers, designers and whichever member of the Organization’s board requests them.
  1. There shall be no less than one Stage Manager employed in each company and each production must be assigned a Stage Manager who shall be primarily responsible for the Stage Managerial functions.
  2. The Stage Manager shall not be solely responsible for booking rehearsal spaces. The Stage Manager will be involved in the creation of a system, amongst the production team, for booking rehearsal spaces.

Assistant Stage Managers (in the case that no Assistant Stage Manager is hired for the production, the Stage Manager will assume all their responsibilities)

  1. An Assistant Stage Manager is the individual who is assigned to assist the Stage Manager(s) on a specific production or productions. An Assistant Stage Manager may not be assigned the primary responsibility for a production. No Actor already under contract may be assigned as Assistant Stage Manager in the same production. The first Assistant Stage Manager may not act.

Working Conditions for Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers

  1. Whenever the Actors are called, the Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager shall be called. The Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager must be present at all rehearsals and performances. The Theatre shall not require members of the Stage Managerial staff to absent themselves from rehearsals or performances.
  2. The Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager must be present on the deck or in communications from the booth with all backstage areas during all performances, run-throughs, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals. Under no circumstances shall anyone other than the Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager be on book calling the cues of a production.
  3. All rules for actors pertaining to rehearsals, performances, overtime, breaks, rest periods, days off, and travel time shall also be applicable to Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Managers except where expressly states otherwise.
  4. The Stage Manager shall be consulted whenever possible in the choice of Stage Managerial staff.
  1. Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers shall not be required to perform the following, unless they are contracted separately from the Equity contract:
    1. Be the sole person responsible for booking rehearsal spaces (this should be done by the Producing Team, Directorial team, and Stage Management Team in combination)
    2. Design, build, hand, transport, operate, shift, run, shop for, or maintain lights, sound, scenery, props, video, wardrobe, animals, etc.
    3. Order or distribute food for any members of the production.
    4. Be responsible for any aspect of transportation or be responsible for the maintenance of any vehicle.
    5. Be responsible for any aspect of laundry or dry cleaning.
    6. Be responsible for setting up stage managerial tech tables for technical rehearsals.
    7. Be responsible for supervising the Stage Managerial staff.
  1. Stage Manager’s Workweek and Overtime Compensation:
    1. The total workweek for Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers shall not, except during one seven-day period prior to the official opening for each production (Tech Week), exceed 52 hours per week, and shall be restricted to duties set forth below. The following duties shall be used in the calculations of the Stage Manager’s workweek and overtime compensation shall be required for any such work in excess of the allowable workweek.
  1.     All rehearsal and performance hours.
  2.     Any production meeting. A production meeting is any meeting which involves the discussion of elements of the production which directly affects the duties and responsibility and which the Stage Manager and/or Assistant Stage Manager would be reasonably expected to attend

  1. Production Script
    1. It is agreed that it is the duty of the Stage Manager to assemble and maintain the production script for the actual technical and artistic operation of the production and that the production script remains the property of the Theatre.
    2. No Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager will be required to prepare any additional production script or book for publication or archival purposes or for use in any other production of the play or musical.

Mission Statement: BlueJay is a Dramatic Theater-based student organization at Emerson College. Their purpose as a collective and organization is to execute and depict relatable theater in which their young-adult and college-aged audiences can see themselves accurately portrayed onstage. In doing so, BlueJay will also work to make audition material accessible for students who are struggling to find text that suits their age group, gender identity, relationship to the content, and/or more, creating a collection of literary materials available for use. They aim to appeal to and uplift the demographic they are working with in creating an inclusive, professional, and familial work environment, as well as creating a space in which actors, designers, Managers, and staff feel supported and encouraged to share their ideas. Their goal is to inspire the artistic spirits of young creatives through proper representation and relatability.
